Hacking your 3DS (also known as Homebrew) has many advantages. Homebrew allows you to install 3DS game, DLC backups and Virtual Console games to your SD card and play cartridge free. You can also play Nintendo DS roms, import save files, and use cheats. This wikiHow teaches you how to Homebrew your 3DS, 3DS XL, and 2DS.

Understand the risks of hacking your 3DS. Hacking your 3DS or 2DS system can cause permanent damage to your 3DS or 2DS system if it's not done right. In rare cases, it may be rendered a permanently unusable paper weight. Additionally, Nintendo has been known to ban users with hacked systems. Follow these instructions exactly and continue at your own risk. Pay attention to the firmware version of your Nintendo 3DS or 2DS system and do not continue unless you have the right firmware version.

Insert a micro SD card into your 3DS and power it on. If you don't already have a 32 GB or higher micro-SD card inserted into your 3DS, go ahead and insert one and power it on. The way you insert a micro-SD card differs on different 3DS models. Some newer models require you to unscrew the bottom panel to access the micro SD card slot and battery.
- If you are using a brand new micro SD card, you will need to format it in FAT 32 format in order to use it with your 3DS.

Open the System Settings. Tap the icon that resembles a wrench to open the System Settings menu on your 3DS or 2DS system.

Note the firmware version number. It's in the lower-right corner of the top screen. This method works on versions 11.12.0 through 11.13.0. However, it's not guaranteed to work if there are any newer version updates that may be released in the future. You'll need to know the exact version number, so go ahead and write it down.
- If you are not using version 11.13.0, go ahead and update your 3DS or 2DS. If your firmware is greater than 11.13.0, do not continue unless you know it is safe to do so.

Tap Data Management followed by DSi Ware . This is just a test to make sure your 3DS or 2DS system is compatible with one of the hacks that will be used in this method. If you see the DSi Ware menu under Data Management, go ahead and proceed to the next step. However, if the system crashes and goes back to the home screen, you'll need to use a different method of hacking your 3DS.

Return to your Home screen. To return to your Home screen, either press the Home button or press Back until you back completely out of the system settings menu.

Power off your 3DS and remove the SD card. When you insert a micro SD card into a 2DS or 3DS, it writes a series of folders onto your SD card. You'll need to get some information from the folders using your computer.

Insert the micro SD card into your computer and open Finder or File Explorer. You'll need an SD card reader or SD card USB adapter to to insert your micro SD card into your computer. The Finder has an icon that resembles a blue and white smiley face on Mac. On PC, press Win+E to open File Explorer on Windows.
- You'll also need to make sure you have make sure you have file extensions and hidden files and folders showing. To do this on Windows, click View at the top and then make sure "Hidden items" and "File name extensions" is checked. On Mac, simply press "Shift+Command+period (.)" to show hidden files and folders in Finder.

Open the micro SD card drive followed by the "Nintendo 3DS" folder. The micro SD card will show up as another drive on your computer. Double-click it to open it in Finder or File Explorer. It contains a folder called "Nintendo 3DS" Double-click that folder to open it.

Copy the ID0 number. In the "Nintendo 3DS" folder, you'll see a folder with a random 32-digit name. That folder name is the ID0 number. To copy that number, click the folder once, and then right-click it and click Copy.[1]

Power your 3DS or 2DS back on and open your Friends List. Don't put the micro SD card back in your 3DS or 2DS just yet. Just power it back on. Then tap the orange icon with a smiley face to open your Friends List.
- If you haven't created a Mii on your 3DS or 2DS, you'll need to go ahead and create one now.

Note your friend code. It's the 12-digit number in the lower-right corner of the top screen on your friend's list. You'll need that to download one of the exploits. Be sure to copy it correctly.

Go to https://seedminer.hacks.guide/ in a web browser. Use any web browser you choose on your computer to to go to the seedminer website. This website creates a file that decrypts the encryption for the DSi Ware on your 3DS or 2DS. This allows code to be injected into a compatible DSi Ware application.

Enter your friend code into the top bar. Make sure you enter your friend code correctly with no spaces or dashes.

Paste the ID0 number in the second bar and click Go . The ID0 number is unique to each device. Make sure you enter the correct number from your 3DS micro SD card or else you risk damaging your 3DS or 2DS. Click Go to create a downloadable file for your 3DS.

Register the friend code for the bot on your 3DS or 2DS system. The Seedminer website uses a bot to detect the encryption on your 3DS or 2DS system. The friend code that is displayed on the Seedminer website is the friend code for the bot. Use the following steps to register that friend code on your Nintendo 3DS or 2DS system:
- Tap the orange icon with a smiley face to open your Friends List on your 3DS or 2DS.
- Tap Register Friend in the upper-right corner of the bottom screen.
- Tap Internet.
- Enter the friend code exactly as it is displayed on the website.
- Tap Ok.
- Give the bot any name you choose and tap Ok.
- Tap Ok.

Wait for the seedminer website to update. After you enter your friend code, the seedminer website will process a file for you to download. One average, this can take 1-5 minutes. In some cases, it may take up to a half-an-hour. If it takes longer than 30 minutes, you can join the Nintendo Homebrew Discord server and ask for assistance. If you click Cancel or refresh the page, you will have to start the entire process again.
- Don't worry if the bot doesn't show up on your friends list while the website updates.

Click Download movable.sed . It's the green button that appears when the website finishes processing. This downloads a file called "Movable.sed" to your Downloads folder. Keep track of this file because you will need it later. Once you get that file, you are finished with the Seedminer website.

Click the latest version of Luma3DS. It's the zip file below "Assets". This downloads the Luma3DS program in ZIP format. Once you download this file, you are finished.

Go to usm.bruteforcemovable.com in a web browser. You can use any web browser of your choice.

Click Choose file and select the "Movable.sed" file. This is the file you downloaded from the Seedminer website. This website uses that file to create an exploit that can be used when you boot your 3DS in Safe Mode.

Click Download unSAFE_Mode-bb3 for your system . This uses the "Movable.sed" file to create an exploit that takes advantage of your 3DS or 2DS's safe mode. This is the file that makes it possible to hack your 3DS or 2DS.

Unzip the "Luma3DS.zip" and the "unSAFE_Mode-bb3.zip" files. Both files can be found in your Downloads folder. Use a program like Winzip, WinRAR, or 7-zip to unzip both the "Luma3DS.zip" and the "unSAFE_Mode-bb3.zip" files. Once both files are extracted to their own folders inside the Downloads folder, you can delete the zip files.

Insert your micro SD card into your computer. If the micro SD card from your 3DS or 2DS is not inserted in your computer already, go ahead and insert it.

Copy the "boot.firm" and "boot.3dsx" file from the Luma3DS folder. Both files can be found inside the Luma3DS folder that you just extracted. Select both files and right-click one of them. Then click Copy.

Paste both files into the micro SD card. Navigate to the micro SD card on your computer and paste both the "boot.firm" and "boot.3dsx" files into the root of the micro SD card. Do not put them in any folders. Just put them in the root directory of the micro SD card. Simply right-click and click Paste to paste both files.

Copy the "usm.bin" file from the unSAFE_Mode-bb3 folder. After you paste the two files into the root of your micro SD card, navigate to the unSAFE_Mode-bb3 folder that you extracted. Right-click the "usm.bin" file and click Copy.[2]

Paste the "usm.bin" file into the root of the micro SD card. Return to the micro SD card and paste the "usm.bin" file in the root directory. You should now have the "boot.firm", "boot.3dsx", and "usm.bin" files in the root of the micro SD card.

Navigate the Nintendo DSiWare folder on the micro SD card. To get the the Nintendo DSiWare folder, open the Nintendo 3DS folder on the micro SD card. Then open the folder with the ID0 digit (it's the same one you copied to get the Movable.sed file). Inside that folder, you'll see another folder with a random 32-digit name (the ID1 number). Open that folder. Then open the Nintendo DSiWare folder.
- If there is no Nintendo DSiWare folder, create a new folder called "Nintendo DSiWare". To create a new folder, right-click inside the ID1 folder and click New Folder. Then name it "Nintendo DSiWare".

Move any existing DSiWare backup files onto your PC. DSiWare backup files are ".bin" files that have an 8-digit identification inside the Nintendo DSiWare folder. Select all of them and then drag and drop them onto your Desktop to temporarily remove them from the folder. You will move them back later.

Copy the "F00D43D5.bin" file from the unSAFE_Mode-bb3 folder. Navigate back to the unSAFE_Mode-bb3 folder you extracted and right-click the "F00D43D5.bin" file. The click Copy.

Paste the "F00D43D5.bin" file in the Nintendo DSiWare on the SD card. Navigate back to the Nintendo DSiWare folder inside the Nintendo 3DS folder, followed by the ID0 folder and ID1 folder on the microSD card. Right-click and click Paste to paste the file into the folder. That should be all the files you need to hack your 3DS or 2DS.

Reinsert the micro SD card into the 3DS or 2DS and power it back on. Now that you have all the files you need on your SD card, reinsert it back into your Nintendo 3DS or 2DS and power it back on.

Select System Settings . It's the icon that resembles a wrench. Tap the icon on the bottom screen to open the System Settings menu.

Select Data Management . It's in the System Settings menu on your Nintendo 3DS or 2DS.

Select DSiWare followed by SD Card . This activates an exploit in the Nintendo 3DS Wi-Fi system to install the BannerBomb3 and Luma3DS apps onto the 3DS or 2DS. You will know this worked when both screens turn black and then the bottom screen turns red. It will then reboot to the home screen.

Power off your 3DS or 2DS. To power off your 3DS or 2DS, simply press the power button and then tap Power off.

Press and hold RS + RL + ↑ + A and press the Power On button. That's both shoulder buttons, Up on the D-pad and the "A" button while pressing Power. This boots up your 3DS or 2DS in Safe Mode. This is where you can activate the Luma3DS exploit.

Go through the Wi-Fi setup process. When you boot into Safe Mode, the system will ask you to connect to Wi-Fi to do a system update. When you go through the process, you will get an error message at the end. That's normal. The hack temporarily replaced your Wi-Fi profile. Use the following steps to go through the Wi-Fi setup process:
- Tap Ok.
- Tap I accept.
- Tap Ok.
- Tap Ok on the error message.
- Activate the Luma3DS hack. To get to the Luma3DS hack, use the following steps to navigate to "Detailed Setup" under "Proxy Settings". The bottom screen will turn red and you will see Luma3DS on the top. Use the following steps to get their:
- Tap Yes to configure your internet connection.
- Tap Connection 1 (called "Haaaaaaaxxxxxxx...")
- Tap Change Settings.
- Tap the arrow on the right to navigate to the next page.
- Tap Proxy Settings.
- Tap Detailed Setup.

Press any key. When the Luma3DS hack activates, it will tell you to press any key to reboot. Press any key to continue.

Select "Show NAND or user string in System Settings". It's the third option in the menu. Use the D-pad to navigate to this option and press the "A" button to mark it with an "X".

Press ⇱ Home . This saves your settings and reboots your 3DS or 2DS back into the home screen.

Restore your Wi-Fi profile. Use the following steps to restore your Wi-Fi settings:
- Tap System Settings.
- Tap Data Management.
- Tap DSiWare.
- Tap SD card. The bottom screen will turn green and the system will reboot.

Power off your 3DS or 2DS and remove your micro SD card. In order to run hacked software on your 3DS or 2DS, you'll need to download the software to your computer. Then you'll need to create a few new folders on the micro SD card and copy the files onto the micro SD card.[3]

Insert your micro SD card into your computer and open it. Now that you have all the hacked files you need, you can start copying them to the micro SD card for your Nintendo 3DS or 2DS.

Create folder called "3ds" on your micro SD card. If there's not already a folder called "3ds" on the root of the micro SD card for your Nintendo 3DS or 2DS, use the following steps to create a new one.

Delete the "F00D43D5.bin" file. You don't need this file anymore. Delete it to keep it from interfering with further operations. Right-click the "F00D43D5.bin" file and click Delete or Move to Trash to delete it.

Copy all your ".cia" files in your "Downloads" folder. These files should include, "Anemone3DS.cia", "Checkpoint.cia", "Homebrew_Launcher.cia", "DSP1.cia", "FBI.cia", and "lumaupdater.cia". Use File Explorer or Finder on Mac to navigate to your Downloads folder. Use the following steps to copy all the files that have a ".cia" file extension at the end.
- Open your Downloads folder.
- Right-click and click Sort by on PC or Arrange by on Mac.
- Select Type on PC or Kind on Mac.
- Hold "Shift" or "Ctrl" ("Command" on Mac) and click all the files that have a ".cia" file extension.
- Right-click one of the ".cia" files and click Copy.

Paste the ".cia" files in the "cias" folder on the micro SD card. Navigate back to the "cias" folder on the micro SD card for your Nintendo 3DS or 2DS, right-click inside the folder and click Paste to paste all the ".cia" files inside the folder.

Copy all the ".3dsx" files in the Downloads folder. Now navigate back to the "Downloads" folder on your computer. Use the following steps to copy the ".3dsx" files:
- Hold "Ctrl (or "Command" on Mac) and click the "ctr-no-timeoffset.3dsx" file, and the "FBI.3dsx" file.
- Right-click either file and click Copy.

Paste the ".3dsx" files in the "3ds" folder on the micro SD card. Navigate back to the micro SD card and open the "3ds" folder. Right-click anywhere inside the folder and click Paste.

Navigate to the "luma" folder on the micro SD card. Click the back button to back out of the "3ds" folder and return to the root of the micro SD card. Double-click the "luma" folder on the root of the micro SD card to open it.

Create a new folder called "payload" inside the "luma" folder. Right-click anywhere in the "luma" folder and click New folder. Name the new folder "payload".

Unzip the GodMode9 ZIP file in your Downloads folder and open it. Return to your Downloads folder and use WinZIP, WinRAR, or 7-zip to unzip the "GodMode9 ".zip" file. Double-click the GodMode9 folder to open it once it's unzipped.

Copy the "GodMode9.firm" file. It's in the GodMode9 folder you just unzipped. Open the GodMode9 folder. Right-click the "GodMode9.firm" file and click Copy.

Paste the "GodMode9.firm" file in the "payloads" folder. Navigate back to the micro SD card and use the following steps to paste the "GodMode9.firm" in the "payloads".
- Open the micro SD card.
- Double-click the "luma" folder.
- Double-click "payloads" folder you just created.
- Right-click and click Paste to paste the "GodMode9.firm" file in the "payloads" folder.

Copy the "DO_NOT_LAUNCH.firm" file in the Downloads folder. . Return to the "Downloads" folder and right-click the "DO_NOT_LAUNCH.firm" file. Then click Copy.

Paste the "DO_NOT_LAUNCH.firm" file in the "payloads" folder. Use the following steps to paste the "DO_NOT_LAUNCH.firm" file in the "payloads" folder:
- Open the micro SD card.
- Double-click the "luma" folder.
- Double-click "payloads" folder you just created.
- Right-click and click Paste to paste the "DO_NOT_LAUNCH.firm" file in the "payloads" folder.

Copy the "gm9" folder in the "GodMode9" folder. Use the following steps to copy the gm9 folder.
- Return to your Downloads folder.
- Open the GodMode9 folder you extracted.
- Right-click the "gm9" folder and click Copy.

Paste the "gm9" folder in the root of the micro SD card. Navigate back to the micro SD card and right-click any where inside the root of the SD card. Click Paste to paste the entire "gm9" folder inside the micro SD card. You now have all the files you need transferred to the SD card.

Reinsert your micro SD card into your Nintendo3DS or 2DS and power it on. It should power on like normal.
- If you haven't already do so by now, make sure you do a system update now. It is safe to do so at this point.

Open Download Play application. It's the icon that has an orange icon with an image of a 3DS. Tap it twice to launch the app and wait for the two buttons to appear on the title Screen.

Press LS+↓+Select at the same time. Pressing the Left Shoulder button, Down on the D-pad, and the Select button at the same time on the Download Play app launches the Rosalina menu.

Select "Miscellaneous options". Use the D-pad to navigate the menu options. Highlight "Miscellaneous options" at the bottom of the menu and press the "A" button to select it.

Select "Switch the hb. title to the current app". It's the first option at the top of the menu. Press "A" to select it.

Exit the Rosalina menu. Use the following steps to back out of the Rosalina menu.
- Press "B" to continue.
- Press "B" to return to the previous menu.
- Press "B" to back out of the Rosalina menu.

Close and relaunch the Download Play app. Press the "Home" button to close the Download Play app. Then tap it again to relaunch it. This time it should launch the Homebrew Launcher.

Tap ctr-no-timeoffset . It's the first option in the Homebrew Launcher. Tap it to launch it.

Press A to set the offset to 0. This sets the system clock to match the RTC system.

Press ⇱ Home . This returns to the Homebrew Launcher.

Tap FBI . It's the second option in the Homebrew Launcher. Tap it to launch it.

Navigate to the "cias" folder. FBI is a file browser for your SD card. Use the D-pad to navigate the different option in FBI. Press "A" to select an option. Use the following steps to navigate to the "cias" menu:
- Select "SD" at the top of the menu.
- Select "cias".

Select "Install and delete all CIAs". It's the second option in the menu.

Press A . This confirms your selection. This will install all the ".cia" files on the SD card and remove the install files.

Press ⇱ Home . This closes Download Play and returns to the Home menu.

Unwrap all the presents. You'll notice you have a bunch of new software on your Nintendo 3DS or 2DS. Tap the package icons to unwrap all the presents.

Launch DSP1. It has a pretty plain icon that says DSP1 with some other text. Tap it to open DSP1. The app will do a DSP Dump, which enables sound on Homebrew apps.

Press B . This deletes the app. You don't need it anymore.

Power off your Nintendo3DS or 2DS. Press the power button to bring up the Power screen. Then tap Power off to power down your 3DS or 2DS.

Hold ⇱ Home and power on your 3DS or 2DS. Holding "Start" while you powering up boots up your 3DS or 2DS with the Luma3DS chainloader.

Highlight "GodMode9" and press A . This launches GodMode9.
- If you are prompted to do an essential file backup, press "A" to do so. Then press "A" once it is completed.
- If you are prompted to set the date and time, press "A" to do so. Press "Left" and "Right" on the D-pad to navigate to the year, month, day, hour, and minutes. Press "Up" and "Down" on the D-pad to adjust the settings. Press "A" when you are finished.

Press ⇱ Home . This loads the Action menu.

Setup Luma3DS to CTRNAND. This copies Luma3DS from the SD card to the internal storage on your Nintendo 3DS or 2DS. This allows you to access Luma3DS even if you don't have the SD card inserted. Use the D-Pad to navigate through the menu options and press "A" to select a menu option. Use the following steps to navigate through the menu to "Setup Luma3DS to CTRNAND".
- Select Scripts…

- Select Scripts from Plailect's Guide
- Select Setup Luma3DS to CTRNAND
- Press "A" to proceed when prompted.

Press A when prompted. This will unlock SysNAND (lvl1) writing which will allow you to write to your system memory.

Enter the button combination on screen. Press the buttons displayed at the bottom of the screen to unlock your system memory.

Press A to continue. When it is finished copying Luma3DS to your internal memory, press "A" to return to the previous menu.

Clean up the SD Card. Use the following steps to clean up the SD card:
- Select Cleanup SD Card on the menu.
- Press "A" when prompted.

Press B . This returns to the main menu.

Select "Backup Options". It's the first option on the main menu. Press "A" to select it. This allows you to backup all the work you've done to hack your Nintendo 3DS or 2DS. This will protect you in case anything happens to your system and your unable to boot it up (Brick). You'll need at least 1.3 GB of free space available on your SD card before starting.

Select "SysNAND Backup". It's the first option on the Backup Options menu. Press "A" to select it.

Press A . This confirms and starts the backup process. This will take a while. Make sure your 3DS or 2DS is plugged in.

Return to the main menu. Once the backup is complete, press "A" to continue. Then press "B" to return to the main menu.

Reinsert your micro SD card in your computer open it. After your Nintendo Switch powers down, remove the SD card and put it back in your computer.

Paste the files in a safe location on your computer. It's important to keep a back up of these files. If anything ever your 3DS or 2DS is unable to boot and you've found it had become an expensive paper weight, you can use these files to restore your system. You may even want to make several backups of these files. Find any safe location on your computer that you can remember. Right-click and click Paste.

Navigate back to the "out" folder in "gm9". It's the folder you just copied from. Navigate back to the "gm9" folder on the root of your micro SD card. Then open the "out" menu.

Delete the following files. If you want to regain some of the that's being taken up on the SD card, you can delete the "<date>_<serialnumber>_sysnand_###.bin" file and the "<date>_<serialnumber>_sysnand_###.bin.sha" file. Be sure to leave the other two files.
