How to Fry Onion Rings Without Deep Fryer

Deliciously crispy onion rings are the perfect side dish for homemade burger night. These Oven Baked Onion Rings are a much lighter option than the deep fried version. A lightly seasoned but crispy coating still gives these onion rings all the flavour and crunch you would expect, but they are baked rather than fried.

We love the crunch of a stack of onion rings and they are a must when we make homemade burgers. Easy to make and just 15 minutes in the oven. We pair them with our favourite dipping sauces for a nice little snack too. You can even adapt the seasoning to make different flavoured onion rings.

Why should you try it?

  • Baked instead of fried
  • Lighter than traditional onion rings
  • You can use different seasonings
  • Can be frozen

What you will need

  • Onion - You will need large onions for this, to be able to get decent sized onion rings.
  • Eggs - This is to help the breadcrumbs stick to the onion rings.
  • Breadcrumbs - You can use any breadcrumbs, but we love panko breadcrumbs as they make the onion rings really crispy.
  • Seasoning - We used a Cajun seasoning, but you can use your favourite seasoning blend. Italian or Fajita work well too.
  • Flour -This is what the onions are first coated in, as it helps to soak up any moisture.

Step by step

One: Mix together the flour and Cajun seasoning in a bowl.

A bowl of seasoned flour.

Two: Put the Panko breadcrumbs in another bowl, and whisk the eggs in a third bowl.

Are they healthy?

Whilst I do still enjoy the classic deep fried onion ring, they leave me feeling a bit meh after. Dripping in oil from being deep fried, I can feel a bit oily after eating them, and I want to fee energised after eating.

We have limited the salt in this (just a little in the seasoning) and have baked them instead of fried. The breadcrumbs we have used mean they still get nice and crispy, without having to fry them.

What breading to use

We used Panko breadcrumbs, as we found that is the best way to get them crispy when cooking them in the oven. It gives them a lovely colour and crunch. Panko is a Japanese-style breadcrumb traditionally used as a coating for fried or baked foods and it is stocked in more supermarkets now.

You could swap them for your favourite breadcrumbs, but you might not get the same end result.

Onion ring seasoning

The great thing about these onion rings is that you can swap the seasoning for your favourite blend. We used a Cajun seasoning blend, but you could use Mexican, Italian or even make curry onion rings by using curry powder.

What to serve them with

Onion rings are the perfect side for a burger. So, why not try our Mexican Burger, Greek Turkey Burger, Baked Chicken Burger, Hidden Vegetable Beef Burgers or Salmon Burgers.

If you are looking for some other sides to go with the burger and onion rings, then I recommend our Garlic Potato Wedges, Baked Polenta Fries, The Best Greek Potatoes, Baked Sweet Potato Fries, or Baked Carrot Fries.

Onion rings need dip too, right? Our Homemade Healthier Tomato Ketchup, Healthy BBQ Sauce and Healthy Ranch Dressing all go really well with these baked onion rings.

How to store baked onion rings

You can freeze baked onion rings for up to 2-3 months - we always have some stashed away in our freezer. You can also cook them straight from the freezer -  put them in the oven at 180°C/350°F/Gas 4 for 20 minutes or until warmed through.

  • You can use any breadcrumbs you like, however we find that panko gets them nice and crispy.
  • Feel free to change the seasoning used. You could swap Cajun for Mexican, Italian or Curry Powder.
  • Cooking times will depend on your own and how crispy you like your onion rings. Keep an eye on them and take them out when they are cooked to your liking.
